Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father, who was a carnival barker, was killed when she was a small girl, requiring her mother to help support her family through work as a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth was a student and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. However, she was only in the school for two years, before leaving to pursue her acting career. This path was fraught with challenges. When she was offered a job in New York as a model for a detective magazine she found it difficult to secure opportunities for stage. Then, after a period as a hat-wearing club girl, she decided to return home and quit her job. In Boston, she earned a living working as an usherette during the during the day and then at night performed with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first job as an actor. The study of drama helped her to receive a degree at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
